Press Release: Huhtamaki

In May, Plastic Free World Conference & Expo 2020 sponsor Huhtamaki was recognized by nova-Institute when it was awarded the ‘Bio-based Material of the Year’ accolade for its ‘Fresh’ innovation

Huhtamaki Fresh is a disposable food tray for ready-to-eat meals and has been in the UK market since 2019. The product is made from natural wood fibers which are sourced from FSC-certified and renewable Nordic forests. Fresh is recyclable after use and certified for home composting. It is the natural alternative to black plastic meal trays, and both oven proof and microwavable.

The Huhtamaki Fresh material was developed in partnership with Södra and Saladworks, and the project was funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 initiative.

In separate Huhtamaki news, the company has also launched high-quality face masks to help a responsible return to a new normal, amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The so-called ‘Huhta Masks’ are suitable for everyday use and help reduce the spread of droplets into the environment. Comfortable, breathable and washable, they are made of high-quality fabric with anti-microbial and fluid-repellent properties.

“At Huhtamaki we are committed to protecting food, people and the planet,” commented Ciaran Doherty, general manager, Foodservice UK. “With this new range of face masks, we enter the retail space with a completely new approach for us and a new product group. It is important to us to help people live life as they want it to be. The Huhta Mask allows people to resume their everyday activities whilst taking others into consideration.”

Plastic Free World Conference & Expo North America 2020 will take place at the Cobb Galleria Centre, Atlanta, Georgia, on Tuesday 27 October and Wednesday 28 October.
